| The Historic Drive

The Historic Drive, located at the west end of the Park, will take you on a journey into the past. After driving up the hill, you will witness a panoramic view of the Meramec River Valley. This is a great spot for a picnic.
You will next encounter the Maramec Village Cemetery which serves as the final resting place for about 250 people who lived and worked at the Maramec Iron Works.
Next you will enter onto a road called "Stringtown Road". Its name came from a "string" of cabins that lined both sides of the road in the 1800's. This is where many of the Maramec Iron workers lived. This is also part of the Trail of Tears National Historic Trail.
The Maramec open pit iron mine is located adjacent to "Stringtown Road". It can be entered via a short foot trail which begins along the road. The mine is where much of the iron ore was dug for the iron works. A self guided leaflet is available near the trail entrance.
Be certain to visit the Maramec Museum in order to learn more about Maramec's History.
During the winter months, portions of the Historic Drive may be closed to vehicular traffic.
